Robin was 15 when she got pregnant. An accident , no doubt. She would carry the child and assume the responsibility of motherhood just 4 days after turning 16. I grew to be a large baby. 10 lbs at birth and healthy. Strange considering the amount of marijuana she smoked while pregnant. She was also a heavy cigarette smoker, but later said it made her sick while pregnant with me, so she had to give it up. I guess I wasn’t a fan. Mom would not see another school year, having dropped out going into 9th grade. I don’t know if David was at the hospital or not. We’ve never talked about it. He was the guy who would raise me. Moms entire family was there. Grandma, grandpa, 6 brothers and 2 sisters. My grandmothers name was Norma and her husband was Don. He wasn’t my biological grandfather, but we’ll talk about that a little later. Grandma used to call David dum dum, for years in fact. Davids mom was Roberta, but she went by Jean. She never had much to do with me as I don’t think she believed I was his. He had 5 brothers and 1 sister, only a couple of whom I would ever get to know well. But we spent some time with them growing up. I don’t believe any of them were there either. After I was born We lived at grandmas house. A grand, victorian style home in a heavily Oaked neighborhood. It had a large living room that led into a fireplace room, a large dining room off of that that would lead into a galley kitchen with a seperate dining room adjacent. There were 2 spiral staircases, one beauty in the living room and a hidden gem in the kitchen, a 3 season room led to a sunken front porch. She had a large back yard with 2 patios. It was heaven to me. Upstairs was a bathroom and 4 bedrooms. The master had another bathroom. That was grandmas. The attic had 3 more bedrooms built in, making plenty of room for everyone to share. This would be my home for the first year or so. I vaguely remember afternoons on grandpas lap after work. He was a journeyman bricklayer. He would get home around 5 and we would read the newspaper together while he would sneak me sips of his Hamms beer. We would then wash hands for dinner. Grandma always made a grand dinner, eat, then would clean up while grandpa and I would go outside to play in the yard, well, he watched me play. Or we would watch a game on TV. Grandma would finish and come with her own beer and join us. Funny, I don’t remember much of mom being around in those early days. I’m sure 16 year old girls had something else to do besides being full time mommies. The best days were home at grandmas, but things would soon change.
